How to Create and Use Drafting Agents in Eve

Last updated: July 29, 2026

Overview

This article shows you how to create AI-powered document drafting templates that learn your firm's writing style and how to use them to generate new documents. Drafting agents analyze example documents you provide and apply your firm's structure, language, and formatting preferences to new drafts. This guide covers creating a drafting agent from scratch, drafting documents from your agent, and reviewing and refining the results.

Prerequisites

  • Understanding of what Agents are and when to use drafting agents versus other agent types — see 📄 Agents in Eve

  • At least 2-3 high-quality example documents in DOCX format that represent your ideal style, tone, and formatting

  • Case documents uploaded to your matter if you plan to draft immediately after creating your Drafting Agent

Step-by-Step Instructions

Creating a Drafting Agent

  1. Navigate to the Agents tab or Create Agent button: Click "Create Agent" in the top right corner of your matter or Agents tab. Select "Drafting Agent" as the agent type. You should see a Drafting Agent creation form appear.

  2. Choose your Drafting Agent type: Select the type of document you want to create from the available options (demand letter, complaint, discovery response, mediation statement, or other document types). This tells Eve what kind of structure and legal elements to expect in your examples.

  3. Upload example documents: Provide at least 2-3 high-quality example documents in DOCX format. These examples should represent your ideal style, tone, and formatting. The more consistent your examples are with each other, the better Eve will replicate your style. Eve will analyze the structure, language, and formatting of these documents to learn your firm's standards.

  4. Name and tag your Drafting Agent: Give your Drafting Agent a clear, descriptive name that makes it easy to find later. Add a practice area tag such as Personal Injury or Employment Law.

  5. Choose visibility: "Only me" if this Drafting Agent is personal, or "Shared with firm" if your team should be able to use it. When complete, save your Drafting Agent. It will now appear in your Agents tab and be ready to use for drafting.

Drafting from a Drafting Agent

  1. Select your Drafting Agent: From your matter's Agents section, choose the Drafting Agent you want to use. You can filter by practice area or search by name to find the right Drafting Agent quickly.

  2. Select context files: Choose which case documents Eve should reference when drafting. Include relevant case files, medical records, correspondence, or prior drafts that contain information needed for this document. You can also select folders from your Central Library for additional guidance such as firm-wide standards or templates. Be strategic: more files provide more comprehensive context but slower processing, while fewer targeted files give faster results focused on specific content.

  3. Add document-specific instructions (optional): Provide any special instructions for this particular draft that go beyond what's in your Drafting Agent. For example: "Emphasize the emotional impact of ongoing limitations" or "Use a firm, assertive tone suitable for negotiation." These instructions help customize this specific draft without changing the Drafting Agent itself.

  4. Generate your draft: Click "Draft" to start the process. Eve will work in the background while you continue other tasks. When complete, you'll see a new editable document appear in your matter files.

  5. Review and refine your draft: Review the draft carefully—you remain responsible for all final work. Use the inline editing features to make adjustments directly in the document. You can also ask Eve follow-up questions in the chat panel for specific revisions, such as "Can you expand the section on damages?" or "Rewrite the introduction to be more concise." When satisfied with your draft, export to Word for final formatting and filing.

Best Practices

Provide consistent, high-quality examples: The quality and consistency of your example documents directly impacts how well Eve replicates your style. Use examples that all follow the same structure and tone rather than mixing different approaches.

Upload documents before drafting: Always upload your case files to the matter before running a Drafting Agent. Drafting without proper document context will result in generic placeholder information rather than case-specific content.

Treat Drafting Agents as starting points: Drafting Agents are designed to give you excellent first drafts. Always plan to review outputs carefully, iterate on results to refine them for your specific needs, and apply your professional judgment to all final work.

Use document-specific instructions strategically: Save general style preferences in your Drafting Agent examples, but use document-specific instructions for case-unique requirements. This keeps your Drafting Agent flexible while still allowing customization for individual drafts.

Create variations for different case types: Don't hesitate to create multiple Drafting Agents for the same document type if you handle different kinds of cases. For example, you might have separate demand letter Drafting Agents for motor vehicle accidents versus premises liability cases.

Share successful Drafting Agents with your team: When you create a Drafting Agent that works well, share it with your firm. This helps standardize best practices, ensures consistency across your firm's documents, and improves efficiency across your entire team.
