Picking Your First Task

You don't need a plan for your whole caseload to get started. The easiest way in is the same for every firm, regardless of practice area or which Eve features you'll eventually use most: create a matter, and put a file in it.

Every single thing Eve does — medical chronologies, drafting, chat, everything — happens inside a matter, against files that live there. So rather than trying to figure out which advanced feature to try first, the best first move is just building the foundation everything else sits on.

Step 1: Create a Matter

From your homepage, click New Matter at the top of the screen.

Give it a name that matches how you'd naturally refer to the case — most firms use something like Client Name – Case Type (for example, "Alvarez – MVA"). You can add a case number too, if that's part of your firm's convention.

Name matters the way you'd search for them later. Future-you, searching in a hurry, will thank present-you.

Step 2: Upload a File

Once your matter is created, drag and drop a file (or a few) directly into it. This can be anything relevant to the case — a client intake form, a police report, a set of medical records, correspondence — whatever you have on hand.

Eve accepts PDFs, Word docs, text files, and even text-based images like scanned notes or screenshots (Eve can read the text in them). Audio files in WAV or MP3 are supported too. Video isn't.

A few limits worth knowing: PDFs can run up to 10,000 pages, Word docs up to 2,000, and you can upload up to 1,000 files at once, up to 15,000 total per matter.

Step 3: Confirm It Landed

Give Eve a moment to process what you uploaded. Once it's done, you'll see your files listed on the left side of the matter — click into one to open and read it natively inside Eve.

If something fails to upload, you'll see a small red flag next to the document's title once you're in the matter. This can be a quick and easy way to ensure Eve has the full context of your matter.

That's it. You now have a real, working matter with files Eve can reference — the same starting point every task in Eve builds from.
