How to Upload Documents Manually in Eve

Last updated: March 10, 2026

Overview

This article shows you how to upload files directly from your computer into Eve when creating a new matter or adding documents to an existing matter. You'll learn how to use the cloud upload button, upload folders while preserving their structure, and manage your uploaded documents.

Prerequisites

  • Files must be downloaded to your local computer (if uploading from Dropbox, ensure files are fully downloaded first — dragging Dropbox folders may only upload links, not actual files)

  • Zip files must be fully extracted (unzipped) into a regular folder before uploading

  • Files must meet Eve's supported file types and size requirements (see "Supported File Types and Size Limits in Eve" article)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Choose When to Upload — You can upload documents at two different points depending on your workflow:

During matter creation: When you create a new matter, you'll see a pop-up panel on the right side of your screen prompting you to upload or select documents for your case.

After matter creation: As your case progresses and you gather more documents from your client or opposing counsel, click the cloud upload button to add files to an existing matter. You can also use the cloud upload button in the "Select Context" section of Eve's chat bar.

  1. Select Your Files or Folders — In the upload pop-up, you can either click to browse and select files/folders or drag and drop them directly into the upload area. When you upload folders, Eve automatically preserves your folder and subfolder structure, mirroring your local drive or document management system organization.

  2. Review Your Selection — After selecting documents, you'll see a confirmation screen where you can review everything you've chosen. At this stage, you can remove any unwanted files or add more documents before finalizing the upload.

  3. Access and Select Documents for Use — Once uploaded, documents appear both in the left panel and when clicking "Using Files" in the chat bar. Active documents (in use in the current Session) are marked with a blue checkmark. You can click "Select all" or individually select the documents you need marked through the Using Files button before asking questions to Eve. Available but inactive documents appear in the list without checkmarks.

  4. Manage Your Documents — Click any document name to preview it in the left half of your screen. Use the three dots menu next to each document name to rename, download, or delete documents. Use the Search function to locate specific documents in large collections. You can also "Pin" a document to the Matter, which makes it easier to open new Sessions and have Eve reference your core case documents without having to select them with the checkmark each time.
