How to Create a New Matter in Eve

Last updated: June 26, 2026

Overview

This article walks you through creating a new Matter in Eve so you can start working on a case. A Matter is where you and your team manage all work related to a single client's case. This guide covers how to create a Matter, name it using your firm's conventions, and optionally upload files during creation.

Prerequisites

  • You must have an active Eve account

  • You must have appropriate permissions to create Matters in your firm's Eve workspace

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Click the New Matter Button — Navigate to the Matters page in Eve and click the "New Matter" button at the top of the page. A creation dialog will open where you can configure your new Matter.

  2. Name Your Matter — Enter a descriptive name that matches your firm's internal naming conventions (for example, "Client Name - Case Type" or include a case number). Using descriptive names helps you and your team easily identify and find the Matter later, especially if you need to return to it after a break or share it with team members. When complete, you'll see your Matter name displayed in the creation dialog.

  3. Upload Files (Optional) — You can upload files during Matter creation or skip this step and add files later. If your firm has an integration with a document management system (DMS), you can select files from the linked platform. Alternatively, select "Upload New Files" and choose documents or folders from your computer. You can always upload and add more documents after the Matter is created. When files are selected, you'll see them listed in the creation dialog.

  4. Complete Matter Creation — Confirm your selections to create the Matter. You'll be taken into the Matter workspace where you can start working on your case. From here, you can upload additional files, use Eve's agents to analyze your case, draft documents using drafting agents, and create a new session for discrete tasks. We strongly recommend opening a new Session for each discrete task you take on with Eve, so that Eve can be hyper-focused on the task at hand.
