Citations

Overview

A citation is a pointer from something Eve said to the document it came from. Citations appear as numbered bubbles in chat responses and are available on any sentence in a draft.

The whole skill is two clicks: click the bubble, land on the passage, read the line. A claim with a citation attached takes seconds to confirm.

In Chat

Citation bubbles, such as [Deposition.txt] and [intakeform.pdf], appear inside the response text. Each one belongs to a specific fact in the answer.

Clicking a bubble opens the document sections that support that statement, ordered by how closely they relate to it.

In a Draft

Citations are not shown inline in a draft. Highlight any sentence or section and select Show Sources to see the documents and passages behind it. Clicking a source opens the full document with the relevant section highlighted.

This works the same way in demand letters, complaints, and discovery responses.

How Sources Are Ordered

Sources are ranked by semantic similarity, meaning Eve orders them by how closely each passage relates to the statement, rather than by where they sit in the file.

That ranking is not exhaustive. It surfaces the passages most relevant to the claim, which is not the same as every mention of the topic across every document. A question that needs completeness rather than support is a search, not a citation check.

Retrieval can take a moment on matters with large or numerous documents.

What a Citation Proves

• It proves the text is really in that document. It does not prove the text was read the way a person would have read it. A value that looks surprising is exactly the one to open.

• A value a colleague corrected carries no document citation. It came from a person rather than a document, and nothing is wrong when the citation is absent there.

• Where a citation lands depends on the source. A document opens at the cited page. Other sources, including notes and imported case management data, open in their own view.

• Text typed directly into Eve is not citable. Section-level sourcing works on uploaded documents. A note written in Eve does not currently support it.
