Closing vs. Deleting Matters in Eve

Overview

Eve gives you two ways to remove a matter from your active list: closing it or deleting it. Closing a matter archives it while preserving all data and allows you to reopen it later, while deleting permanently removes all matter data with no way to recover it. Eve strongly recommends closing matters instead of deleting them to maintain historical records and avoid irreversible data loss.

How It Works

When you finish working on a case in Eve, you need to decide whether to close or delete the matter. Each option handles the matter and its data differently:

Closing a Matter moves the matter to an archived state. The matter disappears from your active matters list but remains accessible in the "Closed" tab. All documents, chat history, drafts, and case information stay intact in Eve's system. You can reopen a closed matter at any time by accessing the Closed tab and selecting "Reopen." This option preserves your work and maintains historical records for future reference or audits.

Deleting a Matter permanently removes the matter and all associated data from Eve. This includes all documents, conversation history, drafts, and case information tied to that matter. Once deleted, the matter cannot be recovered or restored by anyone, including Eve support or firm admins. Deletion is irreversible.

Deletion Limitations: Eve prevents you from deleting a matter if an invoice has been generated for it. This safeguard ensures billing accuracy and maintains a complete audit trail for invoiced work.
