How to Open a Working Document in Eve

Overview

A working document is an editable text file that lives in the matter's file panel. It is where a draft gets shaped over several rounds rather than regenerated from scratch each time.

There are two ways to get one: start a blank document, or save a response from Eve into the matter as a working document.

Option 1: Start a Blank Document

  1. Click the + icon next to Files in the left panel of the matter. A dialog opens.

  2. Name the document and add context if useful, then click Save. The document appears in the files panel.

  3. Edit in the text editor. Type directly, paste in Eve's responses, or draft from nothing. It behaves like a standard text editor.

Option 2: Save a Response from Eve

  1. Find the export buttons under Eve's response. Four appear under every response, with no special prompting needed: Save to Matter, Export to Word with Sources, Export to Word without Sources, and Copy.

  2. Click Save to Matter. A dialog opens.

  3. Name the document and review the content. The text can be edited here before saving. Click Add.

  4. Open it from the files panel to keep editing, or to work on sections of it with Eve.

What Working Documents Do Not Keep

  • Citations. Saving a response into a working document does not carry the citation links across. Citations exist in the Eve chat itself. Verify against the source before the content leaves Eve. See 📄 Citations.

  • Firm formatting. A working document exported to Word carries Eve's default formatting. Firm-specific formatting comes from a drafting agent built against your firm's template.
