How to Open a Working Document in Eve
Last updated: March 10, 2026
Overview
This article shows you how to create a working document in Eve where you can draft, edit, and iterate on complex letters and documents. Eve offers two methods: opening a blank text document from scratch, or saving Eve's responses directly to your matter as a working document. Both methods create editable documents that appear in your matter's file panel.
Prerequisites
You must have an open matter in Eve
For Option 2, you must have received a response from Eve in a chat
Step-by-Step Instructions
Option 1: Open a Blank Text Document
Click the "+" icon next to Files — Locate the "+" icon in the left panel of your matter, next to the Files section. Click it to begin creating a new document. You should see a dialog box appear.
Name and save your working draft — Enter a name for your document and add any context if needed, then click Save. Your new blank document will appear in the left-hand files panel.
Begin editing your document — The text editor will open. You can now type directly into the window, copy-paste responses from Eve, or draft content from scratch. The document functions like any standard text editor, allowing you to edit and iterate until you achieve the results you want.
Option 2: Save Eve's Responses to Your Matter
Review Eve's response and export options — After Eve provides a response in chat, look at the bottom of the response. You'll see four export buttons automatically available: "Save to Matter," "Export to Word with Sources," "Export to Word without Sources," and "Copy." No special prompts or formatting are needed—these options appear for every response.
Click "Save to Matter" — Select the "Save to Matter" button at the bottom of Eve's response. A pop-up window will appear.
Name and confirm your document — Enter a name for the document in the pop-up window. Review the contents that will be saved (you can edit the text here if needed), then click "Add." Eve will save this as a working draft document in your matter's file panel.
Open the document to continue editing — Your saved document now appears in the left-hand files panel. Click it to open and continue editing or iterating with Eve on sections of it.
Important: When you save content from an Eve chat to a working document, hyperlinks to source documents will not be preserved. Hyperlinks only exist in the Eve chat itself. Additionally, when you export a working document as a Word file to your computer, Eve's default formatting will be applied. Firm-specific formatting can only be obtained from a Blueprint draft.
