Understanding Clio Data in Eve

Overview

A matter pulled from Clio shows its Clio data in Eve across four sections. All four are read-only. Clio stays the place where case information is changed.

A matter that came from Clio carries a Clio connection icon. A matter created directly in Eve does not, which is the quickest way to tell which rules apply to the one on screen.

The Four Sections

  • Details. The matter fields holding case details. Fields cannot be added or edited in Eve.

  • Contacts. The main and relevant contacts on the case, shown below Details. Contacts cannot be added or edited in Eve.

  • Notes. Every note made in Clio, most recent first, and searchable. Notes cannot be added or edited in Eve.

  • Clio File Management. Split in two: files that came from Clio, and files created or uploaded in Eve.

Changing any of the first three means changing it in Clio and waiting for the next sync.

How Files Work

The two halves of the file section behave differently:

  • Clio files are read-only. Nothing can be added to this section from Eve.

  • Eve files are anything uploaded or drafted in Eve. They live only in Eve and do not sync back to Clio.

Both halves can be selected as context for a task, so a draft can draw on a Clio file and an Eve file together.

Keeping It Current

Clio data syncs nightly. During the day, the re-sync control in the matter header pulls the latest data from Clio into that matter.

Sync before starting a task rather than after. A draft built on yesterday's version of the file is a draft that has to be checked twice.

What the Clio Connection Does Not Do

  • It does not write to Clio. Work done in Eve stays in Eve unless someone exports it and files it in Clio.

  • It does not update in real time. A note added in Clio during a call is not in Eve until a sync runs.

  • An Eve file is not a Clio file. A demand letter drafted in Eve does not appear in the Clio matter, which matters when someone goes looking for it there.
