Matters

Overview

A matter is a single case in Eve. It holds the files, the sessions, and everything Eve produced for that case, and it is where the work on that case happens.

A matter usually covers one client's case from intake through resolution. A lead that signs converts into one, carrying its calls, documents, and lead overview across.

How It Works

Creating a matter creates a dedicated workspace for that case. Inside it, case files are uploaded and organized, agents are run against them, questions are asked in chat, and documents are drafted.

Team members open the same matter to work on it together, seeing the same documents and the same output rather than separate copies.

Sessions

A matter contains sessions, which are separate workspaces for individual tasks within the case. One session for a case overview, another for a demand letter.

Keeping tasks in their own sessions is what keeps each one focused. A session carrying three unrelated jobs gives worse results on all three than three sessions carrying one each.

How Matters Are Counted for Billing

This section explains the terms that appear on an Eve order form.

For the purposes of an Eve subscription, a Matter is clearly defined in our terms of service: Eve Terms of Service

Matters are further separated into three kinds:

• New Matter: a matter where representation began on or after the Effective Date or the date of initial access to the Service, whichever is later, and which is entered into the Service for the first time. In other words, a case signed after the Eve subscription started.

• Imported Matter: a matter where representation began before the Effective Date or the firm's date of initial access, whichever is later. In other words, an existing case from before the Eve subscription started. Some order forms call these Existing Matters.

• Continuing Matter: a matter already entered into Eve that remains open and active and has had at least one session, conversation, or other action within it. A New or Imported Matter becomes a Continuing Matter once it is being worked on and stays one while it is active.

What a Matter Does Not Do

• Deleting a matter does not release it for reuse. A deleted matter still counts as used.

• Separate occurrences are separate matters. The same client with two unrelated incidents is two matters, not one.

• A matter only knows what is in it. Documents that live in a case management system but have not synced or been uploaded cannot be read, cited, or drafted from.
