Overview

Reasoning Mode is an advanced chat mode in Eve designed for complex legal analysis and multi-step thinking tasks. Unlike Fast Chat, which provides quick conversational responses, Reasoning Mode delivers thorough, structured outputs ideal for sophisticated legal work such as complex document analysis, multi-claim evaluations, and detailed strategic planning. It requires more processing time and computational resources than Fast Chat but provides more comprehensive answers for tasks that demand deep analysis and structured reasoning.

How It Works

Reasoning Mode operates differently from Eve's other chat modes by processing extensive context upfront rather than through iterative conversation. When activated via the toggle button in Eve's chat interface or the blue lightbulb icon in playbooks, it consumes significantly more tokens than Fast Chat to support its deep analysis capabilities. Processing typically takes several minutes rather than seconds, as the system performs multi-step thinking to analyze all relevant information in a single, thorough pass.

The mode works best when given comprehensive information at the beginning of the interaction. Users should provide complete context upfront—including case details, legal background, and specific instructions—rather than building context through back-and-forth dialogue. This approach allows Reasoning Mode to process and analyze all relevant information together, resulting in more comprehensive and structured outputs suitable for sophisticated legal documentation and analysis.

Reasoning Mode is specifically integrated with Eve's playbook functionality, accessible through the blue lightbulb icon when running a playbook. For optimal results, users should structure their prompts using five essential sections: Goal (defining the specific task), Return Format (specifying structure, length, style, and citation requirements), Warnings (providing caveats and constraints), Context Dump (all relevant information upfront), and an optional Intro (brief summary tying everything together).

Note: Eve is introducing Agent Mode as an even more advanced option that handles complex, multi-step questions with improved reasoning and transparent thinking traces. Agent Mode is being rolled out as the default for many users and offers faster performance with more comprehensive answers. Reasoning Mode remains available for users who prefer its specific approach to structured analysis.
