Draft Did Not Complete or Stopped Mid-Process in Eve

Overview

A drafting agent was started and the document never arrived, or arrived partway through.

Nearly every example of this comes down to scope: one run asked to produce too much, read too much, or both. Splitting the work into smaller runs can resolve it.

Check First

• The matter's Files section, for a partial draft. Whatever was produced before the run stopped is saved there and is often worth keeping.

• What the run was asked to produce. The number of discovery requests, the length of the document, and how many sections were in scope.

• How many files were selected as context for the run.

• Whether any single file is unusually large. See 📄 Supported File Types and Size Limits in Eve.

The Document Asked For Is Too Large

Why it happens. A single run produces a single document. A set of a hundred discovery responses, or a complaint with every section drafted at once, is several documents' worth of work in one request.

Split it along a line the document already has:

• Discovery responses in groups of 30 to 50 requests rather than the full set.

• Long complaints and motions section by section: the facts, then the argument.

• The main document first, with exhibits added afterward. See 📄 How to Add and Manage Exhibits in Eve.

Give each run instructions that match its narrower scope. "Draft responses to interrogatories 1 through 30 using the medical records and the police report" is a different request from "draft the discovery responses."

What you should see. Each run finishes and produces its section, and the sections combine into the document.

Too Many Files Are Selected

Why it happens. Every selected file is read. A selection that covers the whole matter spreads the run across material that has nothing to do with the document being drafted.

Select the files this particular document is built from. For responses to medical interrogatories that is the medical records and the expert reports, not the full case file. Where a later section needs different material, run it separately with its own selection.

What you should see. The run finishes, and the draft stays on the documents you chose.

A File Is Over the Size Limit

Why it happens. There are caps on how large a single file can be and how much material one run can take in. A file over the cap is not read, and a selection over the cap stops the run.

Check the sizes of the files in the selection, split anything oversized into parts, and reselect. The current figures are on 📄 Supported File Types and Size Limits in Eve.

What you should see. The run completes once every file in the selection is within the caps.

The Request Mixes Content and Formatting

Why it happens. Asking for the substance and a complex layout in the same breath gives the run two jobs. Tables, exhibit structures, and custom numbering are the usual culprits.

Ask for the content. "Draft the argument section" rather than "draft the argument section with formatted tables and exhibits." Export to Word and apply the layout there, where you have direct control over it.

What you should see. A complete draft with clean basic formatting, ready for the layout pass.

The Work Is Analysis Rather Than Drafting

Why it happens. Some documents need the thinking done before the writing can start, and a drafting run tries to do both at once.

Use a chat agent for the analysis first: the facts that matter, the arguments available, the answers to a group of requests. Then start the drafting run with instructions built on what that produced.
