Cannot Delete Matter in Eve

Overview

You are unable to delete a matter in Eve even though you have firm admin permissions. This occurs when an invoice has been generated for the matter, which prevents deletion to maintain billing accuracy and financial record integrity.

Before You Start — Diagnosis

Confirm the following before attempting any fixes:

  • You have firm admin permissions in Eve

  • You are attempting to delete the matter from the matters page using the ••• menu

  • You see an error message or the delete option is unavailable when you try to delete

Fixes

Possible Cause: Invoice Has Been Generated for This Matter

Cause: Eve prevents deletion of any matter that has an associated invoice. This safeguard ensures billing records remain accurate and complete for accounting and compliance purposes. Once an invoice is created, the matter's financial history must be preserved.

Steps: Instead of deleting the matter, close it to archive it while preserving all data:

  1. Navigate to your matters page

  2. Hover over the matter you want to remove from your active list

  3. Select "Close"

  4. The matter will move to your "Closed" tab and be removed from your active matters list

Expected Outcome: The matter is archived in your Closed tab, removed from your active list, but all documents, conversations, drafts, and billing records remain intact. You can reopen the matter anytime if needed.
