How to Create a Playbook in Eve
Last updated: March 10, 2026
Overview
This article shows you how to create a custom Playbook in Eve to automate multi-step tasks with a sequence of prompts. Playbooks help you get consistent results, save time, and reduce repetitive work by breaking complex workflows into clear, logical steps. You can create Playbooks from scratch or customize existing ones from the Skill Library.
Prerequisites
Access to a Matter in Eve or access to the Skill Library
A clear understanding of the task or workflow you want to automate
Step-by-Step Instructions
Choose Your Creation Method — Eve offers two ways to create a Playbook. Select "Create Skill" from the main page of a Matter or directly in the Skill Library to start building from scratch. Alternatively, if you've already written a useful prompt in a "Talk to Eve" conversation, hover over that message and select the "Magic Wand" icon beneath it to save it as the foundation of a new Playbook. You'll see the Playbook creation interface appear.
Enter Your First Prompt — Write the first step of your workflow in the message box. Be specific and clear about what you want Eve to do. For example, a basic prompt might be: "Review the attached intake call transcript. Extract and list the client's name, the reported date of incident, a brief summary of the alleged harm or issue, and any mentioned adverse parties or witnesses. Present this as a bulleted list." Clarity here improves Eve's ability to execute the task correctly.
Add Additional Steps — Select "New Message" to include additional prompts in the sequence. Each prompt should represent one logical step in your workflow. For complex tasks, breaking them into multiple prompts allows Eve more time to analyze each step and gives you visibility into her thought process. For example, a complex discovery analysis might have separate prompts for identifying deficient interrogatory responses, identifying missing production documents, and formatting the results for a meet and confer letter.
Select Context Documents (When Applicable) — If your Playbook requires specific documents to run, select those documents as context before or when running the Playbook. For the intake transcript example above, you would select the intake transcript file as context. This ensures Eve has the information needed to complete each step.
Proceed to Configuration — Once you've entered all necessary steps, select "Next". You'll see the Playbook configuration screen where you'll set metadata and permissions.
Name and Describe Your Playbook — Give your Playbook a clear title that describes what it does. Add a description that clarifies what the Playbook is used for and what documents should be selected when running it. For example: "Intake Call Summary" with description "Extracts key client information from intake transcripts for case evaluation. Select the intake transcript before running."
Set Visibility Level — Choose who can access this Playbook. Select "Private" if you want only yourself and firm admins to see and use it. Select "Shared" if you want every member at your firm to access and use it. Shared Playbooks help standardize workflows across your team.
Add a Tag for Organization — Select or create a tag to help organize and identify your Playbook. By default, tags for case lifecycle steps are available (e.g., Intake, Discovery, Litigation). You can create custom tags by typing in the field and selecting "Create tag". Tags make it easier to find relevant Playbooks later.
Save Your Playbook — Select "Save playbook" to finalize your new Playbook. You'll see confirmation that the Playbook has been saved. This Playbook can now be selected and used on any Matter in your Eve account.
Alternative: Customize an Existing Playbook — Instead of creating from scratch, explore the Skill Library for existing Playbooks already available in your Eve workspace. You can copy and customize them to fit your firm's language or processes. This approach saves time when a similar workflow already exists. Note that only the Playbook owner (the creator) or Firm Admins can edit existing Playbooks, so copying creates your own editable version.
Test and Refine — Start with common use cases relevant to your practice area, such as case evaluation for Labor & Employment or summarizing police reports for Personal Injury. Run your Playbook on a test Matter and review the output. Expect some trial and error as you learn how Eve interprets prompts—adjust the wording and sequence as needed to get more precise results. Each refinement improves consistency and quality across future uses.
