How to Create Playbooks in Eve

Last updated: March 10, 2026

Overview

This article shows you how to create a Playbook in Eve to automate multi-step workflows and save sequences of prompts you use repeatedly. Playbooks let you turn any structured set of questions or tasks into a one-click reusable skill that you and your team can apply across matters. Use Playbooks for case evaluations, witness list creation, document summaries, deposition preparation, or any multi-step investigative workflow.

Prerequisites

  • Access to Eve with permission to create skills

  • (Optional) An existing chat message you'd like to turn into a Playbook

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Access the Playbook Creation Flow — Click the "Teach Eve" button at the top of your screen to open the skill creation window. Alternatively, if you've already sent a message to Eve that you want to turn into a Playbook, click the magic wand icon that appears below that message. If you use the wand icon, you'll automatically be taken to the Playbook creation flow with that message pre-populated.

  2. Select Playbook as Your Skill Type — If you clicked "Teach Eve" at the top of your screen, you'll see options for different skill types. Select "Playbook" to create a new playbook. (If you clicked the wand icon on an existing message, you'll skip this step and go directly to prompt creation with your message already loaded.)

  3. Write Your Playbook Prompts — Write your prompts exactly as you would write them to Eve in a regular chat. Be specific about the format you want (e.g., "Create a table with columns for..."), provide clear context and instructions, specify what source documents to reference, and include any warnings or exclusions. For multi-step workflows, click the "+ New Message" button to add additional prompts—these will run in sequence, with each step building on the previous one. When done correctly, you'll see all your prompts listed in order in the creation window.

  4. Name and Save Your Playbook — Click "Next" to move to the naming screen. Eve will auto-generate a name and description based on your prompts, but you can edit these to provide more detail about when to use this Playbook. Choose or create a category to organize your skill library (type a new category name and select "Create" from the dropdown to add a new one). Check the "Share with Team" box if you want other users in your organization to access this Playbook. Click "Confirm" to save your Playbook to the Skills Library. You'll see a confirmation that your Playbook has been created and is now available for use.

Best Practices for Playbooks

Break complex workflows into clear, sequential steps. If your workflow has multiple stages, use the "+ New Message" button to create separate prompts for each stage rather than trying to pack everything into one prompt.

Use specific formatting instructions. Tell Eve exactly what format you want for output—tables with specific column headers, bullet points, numbered lists, or prose paragraphs. The more specific you are, the more consistent your results will be.

Test with different file selections. After creating a Playbook, test it on different matters with different document sets to ensure it produces consistent, high-quality results across various scenarios.

Consider creating different playbooks for different case types. A personal injury case evaluation Playbook may need different prompts than an employment discrimination case evaluation. Create separate Playbooks tailored to each practice area or case type rather than trying to make one Playbook work for everything.
