Sync Failure Due to Too Many Documents When Connecting Cloud Storage in Eve

Last updated: September 30, 2026

Overview

The sync does not start, and hovering over the error indicator shows: "The folders you selected for this matter contain too many documents".

This means folders selected from your connected Document Management System hold more than 20,000 files between them. A matter caps at 20,000 documents, counting manual uploads and synced files together, and the sync will not run until the selection is under that.

Check First

  • Hover the error and confirm the message names too many documents rather than a permissions or connection failure.

  • Confirm the source is a connected Document Management System

  • Confirm no documents are arriving in the matter.

Reduce the Selection

Why it happens. A folder that looks reasonable at the top level often contains subfolders nobody thinks about: image directories, log files, backups, archived correspondence. Those count toward the 20,000 the same as case documents do.

  1. Click Manage on the sync error notification.

  2. Re-select the folder you want to sync.

  3. Look through the subfolders in the selection and identify anything that is not case material.

  4. Uncheck those subfolders.

  5. Keep going until the total is under 20,000.

  6. Save the selection and let the sync run.

What you should see. The error clears and the sync starts. Only the selected folders sync, and the matter stays within its limit.

If Trimming Is Not Enough

A matter genuinely holding more than 20,000 case documents cannot be raised. The limit is fixed. Split the work across matters, or sync the folders that the work actually needs rather than the whole client directory.

Per-file size caps are separate from the document count. See 📄 Supported File Types and Size Limits in Eve.
