Cannot Create or Edit Triggers for Auto Agents in Eve
Last updated: March 10, 2026
Overview
You cannot create or edit triggers for Auto Agents because trigger configuration is restricted to Firm Admins only. This restriction occurs when a standard user attempts to access trigger settings or configure automatic execution for an agent. The limitation is permission-based and affects trigger creation, editing, and activation — not manual agent execution or viewing.
Before You Start — Diagnosis
Confirm the following before attempting any fixes:
You are attempting to create a new trigger or edit an existing Auto Agent's trigger conditions
You have Eve 2.0 enabled in your workspace settings
You can access the Agents page in the left sidebar but do not see trigger configuration options when creating or editing an agent
You can run agents manually on matters without issues
Fixes
Possible Cause: Your User Role Is Not Firm Admin
Cause: Only users with Firm Admin permissions can create, edit, or activate triggers for Auto Agents. Standard users can create manual agents, run any agent on demand, and view agent output — but cannot configure automatic execution. This is a security and governance control to ensure automatic workflows are reviewed at the admin level before running across all firm matters.
Steps:
Verify your current user role by navigating to Settings in the left sidebar
Check the Firm Admin permissions section to confirm whether you have admin access
If you are not a Firm Admin, contact your firm's Firm Admin or account owner to request either:
- Firm Admin role access if you need ongoing trigger management responsibilities, or
- Assistance from the Firm Admin to create or edit the specific trigger on your behalf
If your firm does not have a designated Firm Admin or you are unsure who to contact, reach out to Eve support via the help icon in the bottom right corner of the interface
Expected Outcome: Once you have Firm Admin permissions, you will see the "When to Run" trigger configuration section when creating or editing agents. You can then define schedule types (Monthly or On Matter Update), set Additional Condition conditions, and activate Auto Agents across your firm's matters.
Possible Cause: Firm Admin Created Agent But Did Not Enable Trigger
Cause: The agent exists but was created as a manual agent without trigger configuration. Even Firm Admins must explicitly configure and activate a trigger — it is not enabled by default when creating an agent. If the agent was intended to run automatically but no trigger was configured during setup, it will behave as a manual-only agent.
Steps:
Navigate to Agents in the left sidebar
Locate the agent in question from the list of existing agents
Verify whether the agent shows a trigger schedule in its summary card (Monthly or On Matter Update)
If no trigger is displayed, the agent is currently manual-only
If you are a Firm Admin, open the agent and add trigger configuration by editing the "When to Run" section
If you are not a Firm Admin, contact your Firm Admin to request that they add the trigger configuration to this agent
Expected Outcome: Once a trigger is configured and saved, the agent will begin evaluating matters automatically according to the schedule and Additional Condition conditions defined. The agent will also remain available for manual execution at any time.
