How to Use Case Law Search in Eve
Last updated: July 6, 2026
Overview
This article shows you how to enable Case Law Search and use Eve's Legal Research to find, analyze, and verify case law directly in chat. It covers admin enablement, turning the toggle on, controlling jurisdiction, and checking the cases Eve cites. Legal Research is currently in Beta, so a firm admin must enable it for your firm first.
Prerequisites
A firm admin has enabled Legal Research for your firm in Settings > Research. If you do not see the Case Law Search option in the Research tab, ask your firm admin to turn it on.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Enable Legal Research (firm admin) — In Settings > Research, turn on Legal Research for your firm. Once it is enabled, the Case Law Search option becomes available to users in chat.
Turn on Case Law Search in chat — In the Research tab in chat, toggle Research > Case Law Search on for the conversations where you want Eve to search case law.
Ask your question as usual — Ask Eve a legal research question. With the toggle on, Eve searches case law when the question calls for it and includes citations in her response; you will see a scale icon with a status such as "Searching case law...".
Control jurisdiction and date scope — Use Smart Mode to refine scope in plain language ("also include the 10th Circuit," "go back to 2015," "switch to Delaware"), or set it manually with a Jurisdiction (All, Federal by circuit, or a single state) and a Date range (defaults to All time).
Verify a cited case — Click a case law citation badge to open the slide-out preview panel, where you can review the case header, summary, disposition, treatment status, citation count, and full opinion text without leaving Eve.
Save a case for later — Save useful case law to the Central Library (firm admins) or to the matter (anyone) so you can reference the opinion again.
