Sync Failure Due to Too Many Documents When Connecting Cloud Storage in Eve

Last updated: March 10, 2026

Overview

When connecting cloud storage to a matter in Eve, you may encounter a sync failure with an error message stating "The folders you selected for this matter contain too many documents" when hovering over the error indicator. This occurs when attempting to sync folders from Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or SharePoint that exceed Eve's 20,000-document limit per matter. The sync will not proceed until the document count is reduced.

Before You Start — Diagnosis

Confirm the following before attempting any fixes:

  • Hover over the sync error message and verify it displays: "The folders you selected for this matter contain too many documents"

  • Check that you're attempting to sync from Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or SharePoint

  • Confirm the sync has not completed and documents are not appearing in the matter

Fixes

Possible Cause: Selected Folders Exceed 20,000 Document Limit

Cause: The folders you selected for sync contain more than 20,000 total files. Eve enforces a 20,000-document limit per matter, which includes both manually uploaded documents and integration-synced documents. Large subfolders containing images, log files, or other non-relevant documents can quickly push the total count over this limit.

Steps:

  1. Click the Manage button on the sync error notification

  2. Re-select the folder you want to sync

  3. Review the subfolders within your selection and identify any that contain large amounts of irrelevant content (such as image folders, log files, backup files, or other non-case-related documents)

  4. De-select any subfolders containing irrelevant content by unchecking them

  5. Continue de-selecting subfolders until the total document count is under 20,000

  6. Save your selection and allow the sync to proceed

Expected Outcome: The sync error message disappears and the sync begins successfully. Only the selected folders containing relevant case documents are synced to the matter, staying within the 20,000-document limit.
