How to Create a Table of Contents in Eve

Last updated: March 10, 2026

Overview

This article shows you how to use Eve's Create a Table of Contents skill to automatically index and organize large PDF files that contain multiple documents inside them. Legal teams often receive extremely large PDFs—such as employee files from employers or document production during discovery—that contain many smaller documents (commonly called PDF portfolios, binders, or packets). Eve reads through every page of these files, identifies the individual documents inside, and creates an interactive table of contents so you can quickly locate and retrieve specific documents throughout the case lifecycle. If the pages include Bates stamps, Eve extracts those as well.

Prerequisites

  • You must have uploaded the PDF file(s) you want to index to your Matter in Eve

  • The PDF file should contain multiple sub-documents or sections that you want to catalog

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open the Create Table of Contents Skill — Navigate to the Skills window in your Matter and click on "Create table of contents." Select the documents you want Eve to analyze from the file picker. You should see the skill options appear in the interface.

  1. Start the Table of Contents Creation — After selecting your files, confirm your selection to kick off the request. Eve will display an outline of the task it is performing and deliver the table of contents within minutes. The skill processes every page to identify where individual documents begin and end within the larger file.

  1. Review the Table of Contents — Once Eve completes the task, review the generated table of contents. The table is interactive—you can click on each row to jump directly to that document's location in the larger file. Verify the results to ensure Eve correctly identified all sub-documents. You should see each document listed with its location and Bates stamp information if applicable.

  1. Save the Table of Contents to Your Matter — To create an editable draft directly in Eve, click the "save" icon in the top right corner. This saves the table of contents to your Matter, where you can edit it as needed and export edited versions to Word later. You should see confirmation that the draft has been saved to your Matter.

  1. Download the Table of Contents to Your Computer — To export the table as a CSV file, click the "doc+" icon in the top right corner. Eve will download the table of contents as a CSV file to your computer, which you can open in spreadsheet software or import into other systems.

Note: If you add new files to the Matter after creating a table of contents, you will need to re-run the "Create Table of Contents" skill to include those additional files in your index.
